Six common misconceptions about debt review
19 September 2025 · Debt Review Centre

Before applying for debt review, check what the service involves and what you would be agreeing to. These common assumptions can lead to confusion when comparing an advertisement with an actual proposal.
"Debt review is another loan"
Debt review restructures eligible existing credit through a formal process. It does not give you a new cash loan. A consolidation loan is new borrowing, so it needs a different affordability and cost comparison.

"A free assessment means the whole service is free"
DRC offers a free initial assessment, but formal debt counselling has fees. Ask for the written charges, when they are due and how much of your payment will reach creditors.
Use the debt review fee guide to prepare questions.
"The lowest monthly quote must be the best option"
A monthly amount on its own does not show the repayment term, total cost or whether the proposal has been accepted. Give providers the same financial information and compare the whole schedule.
The provider comparison guide includes questions about payments, interest, fees and ongoing support.
"A calculator result puts me under debt review"
A calculator can help organise your budget and show an estimate. It cannot establish your legal status or replace an individual assessment. Understand the consent and documents involved before making a formal application.
Read about working with a registered debt counsellor and the formal application steps.
"I can cancel the process by stopping payments"
Stopping a payment does not simply remove debt review from your credit record. The position depends on your legal stage and the applicable completion or withdrawal requirements. Contact your counsellor if you cannot maintain the arrangement.
Use the completion guide or the missed-payment checklist for your next question.
"I will never be able to apply for credit again"
New credit is restricted during debt review. Once the process has ended lawfully and the necessary records are updated, a future application is still subject to the lender's assessment. Clearance does not guarantee approval.
